Nothing is more Smashing Pumpkins than seeing their reunion tour hype blow up at an atomic scale, particularly in the form of the everlasting feud between Billy Corgan and D’Arcy Wretzky. The reunited “classic” lineup (sans Wretzky), including Corgan, James Iha, and Jimmy Chamberlin, had been setting up a tour when the bothered bassist revealed that she was disappointed to not be involved.
To catch up those of you who weren’t following the drama: the band then issued an official statement that read, “Ms. Wretzky has repeatedly been invited out to play with the group, participate in demo sessions, or at the very least, meet face-to-face, and in each and every instance she always deferred.” D’Arcy then shot back by announcing that “He says that he’s invited me to come out and play for all of these things, which is a complete lie. He’s never invited me to anything.”
Most recently, D’Arcy showed in an interview the particularly passive-aggressive text messages that comprised the exchange between Corgan and her, showing that Corgan had (unsurprisingly) effectively disinvited her when it became inconvenient.
However, it seems as though the band is putting the inner-band drama aside and getting around to announcing some shows. They just posted an Instagram revealing that they’re playing NYC, Chicago, and LA in 2018. They hashtagged the announcement #SP2018 and they’ve been posting videos of a custom Smashing Pumpkins van, and NYC venue Madison Square Garden, Chicago venue United Center, and LA venue The Forum also posted teasers with that same van video and that same hashtag.
