Kalen and Aslyn Nash are a married couple who have spent time all over the world together and now have a new music group called DEGA. The synth-pop duo recently toured with Washed Out and that is a good place to start when describing their sound. Today we have the premiere of a new song from the band called “Look Back.”
The song consists of layers of synth melodies piled high, creating a dynamic and unforgettable sound. “Look Back” was a vibe thing,” said Kalen. “It didn’t really have a special story or meaning. It started as a bass line. The lyric says, ‘Look Back if you walk away, if you walk away I’ll be gone,’ which creates a word story, but that came secondary. The lyrics on this one fell into place after the music was already a thing.”
Each of the members of DEGA are fairly well-accomplished musicians in their own right. Kalen spent time as the singer of Athens, GA based band Ponderosa. Meanwhile, his wife Aslyn recorded a major label solo album called Lemon Love as well as a second album on Lemonade Records called The Dandelion Sessions. She also has served as a keyboardist and backup singer for Kesha while the pop singer is on tour. While the couple have known each other for 10 years, having married in 2011, it was only recently that they considered making music together. It was one night when Aslyn was out touring with Kesha that the she realized “We were a country apart and hadn’t seen each other in months. I told him that we needed to start collaborating so, at the very least, we could see each other more often.”
“‘Look Back’ was written before the DEGA process, actually,” said Aslyn. “There were demos Kalen created of that song while I was on tour with Kesha, before we were even a band. He wrote it in our first home, a cabin deep in the woods outside Athens, GA. That’s the differentiation! It’s also the only song Kalen has a guitar solo on whole record.”
The band will be releasing their self-titled debut later this month on February 23, 2018 through Lemonade Records.
