Following the announcement for her upcoming fourth record Chime, American rapper-singer-essayist Dessa has continued to drum up the hype with several singles. Following the first two LP cuts “Good Grief” and “Fire Drills,” both of which tackle some intense subject matter, the new single “5 out of 6” adds to her dissection of the human condition.

While “Good Grief” covered the idea of curative pain and “Fire Drills” explored expectations towards women to survive in a world where they are taught to be afraid, “5 out of 6” studies an emotional binary.

Dessa herself told Complex that the lyrics attempt to “reconcile sensitivity with grit–they’re about being the sort of person who makes herself available to the world, and who sometimes gets hurt by it, but holds her position all the same.”

The track was premiered on the radio through KEXP; check it out below. Chime will be released February 23 via Doomtree Records.
