While preparing to celebrate 85 years strong in March, that’s not the only thing the press are talking about when it comes to Quincy Jones.
Currently counting down the pipeline of many eventful months ahead, Jones excites his fans with news of an upcoming Netflix documentary, an Oprah Winfrey-hosted CBS special and a potential TV biopic.
But this wasn’t the only surprises that Jones had up his sleeve for his fans. In his recent conversations with GQ and Vulture, Jones let it rip, with his candid remarks, with no intention of holding back.
From his talk’s of the Beatles being “the worst musicians in the World” to his unprecedented description of Elvis Presley being the “motherfucker” who “couldn’t sing,” Jones gave fans his opinions as well as some plain-spoken experiences with iconic celebrities.
Missing Michael Jackson for anything other than his heart, passion and individualism, according to Jones, would show how Michael bamboozled fans into believing that his music was all his.
When interviewed by Vulture, Jones claimed that Michael was “as Machiavellian as they come.” And although not wanting to get into the conversation “publicly,” “Michael stole a lot of stuff.” Claiming that he was “Greedy”.
An example that Jones gives is the hit single “ Don’t Stop ’Til You Get Enough,” according to Jones, Greg Philliganes wrote the C section [2] to the song. Michael therefore, should have given him 10 percent of the song, but refused to do it. He stole what was Philiganes section, and used the song as his own.
Jones describes this as one of many times Michael has stolen from other icons, and gave examples of songs such as “ Donna Summer’s “State of Independence” and Billie Jean.”
But Jones wasn’t done there. Amongst the many icons he discussed, the headlining surprise was his comments on the legendary band, The Beatles.
With his dismissive remarks on rock being a “white version of rhythm and blues,” Jones described his first and lasting impression of the Beatles as the “worst musicians in the world.”
With arguable reasons to feel this way, Jones gives a detailed description of his studio experience with the band;
“They were no-playing motherfuckers. Paul was the worst bass player I ever heard. And Ringo? Don’t even talk about it. I remember once we were in the studio with George Martin, and Ringo had taken three hours for a four-bar thing he was trying to fix on a song. He couldn’t get it. We said, “Mate, why don’t you get some lager and lime, some shepherd’s pie, and take an hour-and-a-half and relax a little bit.”
By time he got back, Ronnie Verrell came in for 15 minutes and “tore it up.” Ringo being completely surprised described, in admiration, that the track didn’t sound “so bad”,while Jones believed that this was because the “motherfucker” wasn’t him playing it.
Amongst the many scandals and thoughts shared in Jones interview, celebrity candid news wasn’t the only thing he was talking about.
When asked his thoughts on President Trump, Jones described him as an “uneducated redneck,”who tells his supporters what they want to hear, due to his “narcissistic, megalomaniac, mentally limited” mind.
Surprisingly, this isn’t what put readers on the edge of their seat, rather it was Jones confession to dating Ivanka Trump.
According to Jones, twelve years ago, Tommy Hilfiger, who was working with his daughter, Kidada, came to him and said “Ivanka wants to have dinner with you.” With Jones describing her as a “fine motherfucker,” he went out on a limb and dated the then 24 year old Ivanka at age 72.
From the potential events awaiting Jones, to the future controversial interviews he will take, one thing is sure with Jones, not only has he become less candid with age, but his authenticity and ability to speak his mind, is what will keep fans and critics, ready for whatever life offers him, and them, next.
