Paramore has released another music video from their critical and commercial smash After Laughter in the form of “Rose-Colored Boy.” Directed by Warren Fu (The Weeknd, Haim) the video is a throwback to old 80’s news broadcasts and sees the three members of the band (Hayley Williams, Taylor York, and Zac Farro) acting as news anchors on a local television station for the fictional town of Roseville as well as hosting a morning show and a cooking show on the channel. The video also shows the behind the scenes drama of the station along with the added pressure of executives recommending that the trio do more to increase ratings.
Eventually, the music cuts out and Hayley Williams’ character has a moment of internal dialog with her younger self, urging her to drop the act and be herself. Finally, Williams, Farro, and York break down the studio set while miming to the song, decimating the rest of the news team and giving the video a cathartic ending. The video is the 4th to be released from the album, and it follows in the 80’s throwback direction of “Told You So” and “Hard Times.” Musically speaking “Rose-Colored Boy” combines Williams’ high powered vocals with instrumentation reminiscent of vintage Talking Heads: bright synths, booming drums, and processed funk guitar licks.
After a series of lineup changes over the past eight years, Paramore has reinvented themselves, changing their direction away from the blustery emo sound that launched them into mainstream consciousness a decade ago. The group is continuing their hugely successful tour for the rest of the spring, with the trek taking them to Southeast Asia as well as another installment of their Parahoy! cruise.
