Laura Veirs, a singer, and songwriter from Portland has been writing songs for almost twenty years and last year was part of the supergroup, case/lang/veirs created by Veirs, k.d. lang and Neko Case. Now, Veirs is back again with her upcoming new album, her tenth solo full-length album to be exact. The new album is set to release early next month. Along with today’s album announcement, Veirs is also announcing a North American tour as well as sharing the official video for her lead single, “Everybody Needs You.”
The video for “Everybody Needs You” is directed by Lance Bangs and features animation from Marissa Paternoster of Screaming Females. Like a late night drive through the city, the song takes you on a ride that is perfectly light and breezy. Nothing too serious, just a good time with your head back in your seat, as you stare out the window watching the city lights pass you by.
“The Lookout is about the need to pay attention to the fleeting beauty of life and to not be complacent; it’s about the importance of looking out for each other,” says Veirs. “I’m addressing what’s happening around me with the chaos of post-election America, the racial divides in our country, and a personal reckoning with the realities of midlife: I have friends who’ve died; I struggle with how to balance life as an artist with parenting young children.”
Veirs’s album, The Lookout is the first solo Veirs effort since her 2013’s ethereal Warp and Weft. It draws on the talents of a time-tested crew of musicians: Karl Blau, Steve Moore, Eli Moore, Eyvind Kang and Martine. Sufjan Stevens and Jim James provide guest vocals. The Lookout will be available to purchase and stream on April 13th via Raven Marching Band Records.
