Former Crystal Castles member Alice Glass is back with another new song after striking out on a solo career. The new song is called “Cease and Desist” and is accompanied by a seizure-inducing video clip. Thematically, the song is about about abuse victims — Glass describes it as a “a call to arms for all survivors.” With lyrics like “PROMISE ME YOU’RE NEVER THE VICTIM … YOU HAVE TO FIGHT RIGHT NOW” she is seeking to empower people who often feel afraid, worthless and even at fault for their abuse. The song runs a short 1:54 seconds, but Glass makes the most of the time with plenty of staticky electronic dissonance and her trademark shouted vocals.
The new song features writing contributions from former HEALTH member Jupiter Keyes and producer Dreamcrusher. It’s the first song from Glass since she surprise-released her self-titled solo EP back in August 2017. According to a press release, she has plans to release more music in 2018.
According an account from Glass earlier this year, she too is a victim of abuse. She alleges that her former Crystal Castles bandmate Ethan Kath (nee Claudio Palmieri) abused her for years and was the reason she left the band back in 2014. She was eventually replaced by new female vocalist, Edith Frances, who appeared on the band’s most recent LP Amnesty (I). According to Glass’s account, she first met Kath as a 15 year old high school student — he was 10 years her senior. She alleges that she “came to in the back of his car extremely intoxicated (from drinks he had given me that night). We didn’t talk for months after that.” After he sought her out, they eventually formed Crystal Castles. In the aftermath of her allegations, Kath has filed defamation lawsuit against her, with the process server serving her with the defamation case following a Chicago show in 2017.
