Andy Rourke released a statement denying all involvement in the newly announces “Classical Smiths” concert series. The concert series was scheduled to showcase a classical reimagining of the music of the The Smiths.
Drummer Mike Joyce, bassist Andy Rourke and second guitarist Craig Gannon were set to be joined by the Manchester Camerata Orchestra for shows across London, Manchester and Edinburgh prior to setting off for a full UK Tour.
Rourke has announced that he has not had any involvement in the “Classical Smiths” series. In providing his statement he expressed that he was “deeply saddened” that such “false statements” were made on his behalf.
“I am deeply saddened that during the week of the death of my dear friend Dolores O’Riordan, that false statements are made on my behalf. At no time did I give my consent for anyone in connection with this Classically Smiths project to act on my behalf or my name and nothing was ever confirmed, approved or contracted by me or my team.”
Rourke had close ties to lead vocalist of The Cranberries, playing together in alternative rock band D.A.R.K. The band formed in New York City in early 2009. The band consisted of bassist Andy Rourke, lead vocal Dolores O’Riordan from The Cranberries and lastly NYC-based producer and songwriter Olé Koretsky. The band released its very first 10 track, debut album titled Science Agrees last spring.
In addition, when addressed, representatives of Rourke supported his position of there being no informal or formal agreement of Rourke having any participation in this project. The representative goes on to explain that the parties involved were advised on “multiple occasions” prior to them going to the press.
Both a press conference and press release were scheduled and serviced to the media without knowledge or approval of Rourke and his team. According to Rourke any quotes that were attributed in any press materials relating to the “Classical Smiths” projects were neither provided or authorized by Rourke or his representatives.
In further news, sources has confirmed the shows cancellation. In a statement, Joel Perry of Bad Production Ltd, said that due to the response to the “recent comments in the press, the planned Classically Smiths events will now, no longer be taking place.”
After speculations of Rourke’s involvement in the project, arguably the best decision to be made was the shows cancellation, but whether there was any original agreement between all parties of the project going forward or not, is still arguably debatable.
