The Spook School – Could It Be Different?

Uniquely Indie

The Spook School is no stranger to the world of indie music, and with the release of their third LP this month, this is made clear to the listener. Could It Be Different? does a good job of portraying the uniqueness of the group while offering some solid tunes at the same time.

The album starts with the track “Still Alive” and sets the tone for the more punk side to the indie music The Spook School makes. It has a catchy beat to it that makes for easy listening in the first place; however, there is more to the track than just the catchy beat. This song stands out because of the content held within the lyrics. It is a song many people could connect with and relate to, which always makes for a strong song, especially at the beginning of an album.

As the album goes on, there is a nice balance between the two vocalists, with “Less Than Perfect” being the first track on the album to be prominently female-lead. This song has a vibe that could easily be the background music to a scene in an indie movie about two youngsters in love. This is an easy song to put on repeat and never get tired of hearing.

While the harmonies in the songs always seem to be a strong suit, they are especially standout in “Keep In Touch.” There is something calming about the way this song was written and mixed together that makes it one of the best on the album. There is somewhat a nostalgic feeling to this track that just adds to the romance of it all.

“I Only Dance When I Want To” is a charming song when focusing on the lyrics. The entire theme of the song is beyond relatable with the idea that people go out of their ways for love interests, it’s just an added bonus that the lyrics are backed with an amazingly fun beat. This song stands out on first listen through of the entire album, but continues to be a treat to hear many times after the first time.

The album goes on to stay true to The Spook School’s unique indie sound that the record started off with. The album does a good job overall of discussing important and relatable themes in the lyrics, which is something The Spook School has received praise for over the years. Could It Be Different? concludes on the track “High School,” which does a great job of tying together all of the themes throughout the album and makes for a strong finish to the album.
