Derek Smalls, also known as the bassist Harry Shearer from Spinal Tap mockumentary, has announced the working of a upcoming album Small Changes (Meditations Upon Ageing). The album will be available on April 13 via Twanky Records/BMG. Shearer was well known as the voice of Mr. Burns on The Simpsons.
The album is produced by CJ Vanston and Harry Shearer. According to the press release, guest artists of the album will be Jeff “Skunk” Baxter, Gregg Bissonette. Larry Carlton, David Crosby, Donald Fagen, Peter Frampton, Taylor Hawkins, Jim Keltner, Danny (Kootch) Kortchmar, Russ Kunkel, Michael League, Jane Lynch, Steve Lukather, Judith Owen, Snarky Puppy Horns, Joe Satriani, Paul Shaffer, Chad Smith, Richard Thompson, Steve Vai, Waddy Wachtel, Rick Wakeman, Phil X, and Dweezil Zappa.
Smalls describes the album as “halfway between ‘rage against the dying of the light’ and trying to find the light.” When he was asked about how he gathered many well known artists for the project, Smalls responded “Pity fuck.”
With each song, Smalls added a small note to each about the outline. For “Openture”, the artist will be joined by the The Hungarian Studio Orchestra. For “Rock ‘n’ Roll Transplant”, the artist will be playing with Steve Lukather, Jim Keltner and Chad Smith. For “Butt Call”, the artist will be playing with Phil X and Taylor Hawkins. For “Small Change”, the artist will be playing with The Hungarian Studio Orchestra, Judith Owen, Danny Kortchmar, and Russ Kunkel. For “Memo To Willie” the artist will be playing with Donald Fagen, Jeff “Skunk” Baxter, Larry Carlton and The Snarky Puppy Horns. For “It Don’t Get Old”, the artist will be playing with Peter Frampton and Waddy Wachtel. For “Complete Faith” , the artist will be joined by the Hungarian Studio Orchestra. For “Faith No More”, the artist will be joined by The Hungarian Studio Orchestra and Todd Sucherman. For “Gimme Some (More) Money”, the artist will play with Paul Shaffer, Waddy Wachtel and David Crosby. For “MRI”, the artist will be playing with Dweezil Zappa. For “Hell Toupee” , the artist will be joined by The Hungarian Studio Orchestra. For “Gummin the Gash”, the artist will be playing with Steve Vai, Gregg Bisonnette and Jane Lynch. For “She Puts the Bitch in Obituary”, the artist will be playing with Richard Thompson and Jane Lynch. For “When Men Did Rock”, the artist will be playing with Michael League, Joe Satriani, Rick Wakeman, and The Hungarian Studio Orchestra. The tracklist is listed below.
