Between the Buried and Me, one of the most well-known progressive metal bands in America, have been gearing up for the release of their eighth studio record since April of last year. Now, the album is finally ready, and the group has recorded so much material that it’ll be released in the form of a double-record, with Automata I (as it will be called), set to be released on March 9th via Sumerian Records and Automata II to follow sometime in the Summer.
The video for the first single has been released, titled “Condemned to the Gallows,” which will function as the first track on the record. Automata has been described as a concept record, based on the idea of being able to view dreams broadcasted on television. Lead vocalist Tommy Rogers elaborated on the concept for The PRP, asking: “What if dreams could be broadcast for the purpose of entertainment? Could you consume the innermost thoughts of another person on screen? If you could, what does that say about an attention-starved audience? More importantly, what would become of the dreamer?”
The video for the new track seems to preview these ideas, as images of the band playing are presented through a digital and ultra-sound-like lens while the song continually shifts from energetic and staccato to light and more groovy. Watch the video for “Condemned to the Gallows” below, and check out the group on tour throughout March and April 2018.
