As recent as last month, the award nominations for the 2018 Grammy Awards has been announced and features an amazing slew of artists set up to receive prize for their hard work. Today, as noted through Pitchfork, The Grammy Awards has announced its first set or Grammy performances from the likes of Childish Gambino, Lady Gaga, Pink, and Little Big Town. The Grammys take place at New York’s Madison Square Garden on the 28th of January. What makes this more special is that this will be Childish Gambino’s first live performance since last year’s Governors Ball.
Childish Gambino (AKA Donald Glover) is nominated for Five Grammys, including the highly coveted Album of the Year for his Funkadelic inspired Awaken, My Love!. Additionally, Jay-Z and Kendrick Lamar are both leading the nomination pool, with 8 and 7 nominations respectively.
Pink has been nominated for Best Pop Solo Performance for her incredible song “What About Us.” Lady Gaga is also up for Best Pop Solo Performance for her track “Million Reasons” and is also up for the award for Best Pop Vocal Album for her newest record Joanne. Little Big Town has been nominated for Best Country Duo/Group Performance and is also up for Best Country Song for the work they did with Taylor Swift. Lastly, Little Big Town is also up for the highest country award The Grammys has to offer, Best Country Album. Among all the performers, though, Childish Gambino takes it home for most nominations. Aside from Album of the Year, Childish Gambino is nominated for Record of the Year for his single “Redbone”, for Best Traditional R&B Performance (also “Redbone”), for Best R&B song (“Redbone,” again), and, lastly, for Best Urban Contemporary Album.
Last year at the 2017 Grammys, Lady Gaga performed with Metallica and Little Big Town performed, too, but those musicians, so far, are the only repeating performer for the 2018 Grammy Awards. The Grammys have been criticized in the past for being “too white” like The Oscars, but it seems, this year, that things are finally starting to shape up. There are also some Broadway nods this year, as Patti Lupone and Ben Platt are both nominated for their incredibly tear-jerking work for New York’s “Dear Evan Hansen”.
