In a nice little early Christmas present, The Streets recently released two new tracks. The first new music from the UK hip hop and garage outfit in six years, the songs were dropped off last Friday, overnight, on iTunes.
The first cut, “Burn Bridges” takes a step back from the more melodic sonic palette of what was previously considered The Streets’ final album, Computer and Blues. “Burn Bridges” uses a slow, icy grime instrumental, with mastermind Michael Skinner spitting a whole bunch of bitter-sounding bars over the top.
On the other hand, the second track “Sometimes I Hate My Friends More Than My Enemies,” sounds like old school Streets material from the early 2000’s. With off-kilter UKG beats, looped vocal samples and blunt but effective lyrics, the song gets you right into the groove. Both of them are sick.
The tracks come after Skinner announced earlier this year that 2018 would see a UK tour from The Streets. “I’ve missed tour buses very much. Which is the least of the reasons why I have decided to tour The Streets again,” Skinner said in a press release at the time.
“With my Tonga parties, the new rap and grime MC’s I have been producing and the DJing, I have been living with music since making The Streets for nearly as long as I made The Streets,” added Skinner. “I’m not the guy smoking in the car anymore though, I have become the guy in the club, so I hope I will be excused for putting on after parties in nightclubs after every show.”
