Lorde has canceled the show in Tel Aviv, Israel on June 2018. This follows the artist’s announcement of a North American tour in 2018, cover of “I’m On Fire”, and nomination on the 60th Grammy Awards.
According to Pitchfork, it was last Wednesday when Lorde tweeted that she was “considering all options” regarding the concert. This was in response to an article in New Zealand’s The Spinoff urging her to “join the artistic boycott of Israel.” According to Consequence of Sound, Lorde released a statement expressing her view on the issue saying “I’ve received an overwhelming number of messages and letters and have had a lot of discussions with people holding many views, and I think the right decision at this time is to cancel the show.” She continues by saying “I pride myself on being an informed young citizen, and I had done a lot of reading and sought a lot of opinion before deciding to book a show in Tel Aviv, but I’m not too proud to admit I didn’t make the right call on this one.”
Both sides of the conflict have expressed their opinion on the matter of the decision. Many artists, such as Roger Waters and Thurston Moore, have joined the side with the Palestinians on the basis of mistreatment. Others have sided with Israelis have said that Lorde’s cancellation will do nothing but create more tension.
One of the people that have sided with the Israelis is Roseanne Barr from Roseanne, who has stated that the singer is a “bigot” when she cancelled the concert. Barr continued expressing her opinion on Lorde’s decision on Christmas Day by retweeting anti-Lorde sentiments.
