Covers appear to be more and more an integral part of music as the history of music progresses. From variations of popular classical works to present day covers (such as paying homage to David Bowie or Prince) have moved their way into albums, television, and the cinema. Now, according to bluegrass music blog Cowboys & Indians have released the premiere video of The Infamous Stringdusters covering the 1980s classic “Just Like Heaven,” originally performed and written bypost-punkers The Cure.
The video features a roller skating rink in which a love story develops as the song does. With the Stringdusters playing their heart out in the center of the rink, roller-skaters continuously happily roll around the band with smiles spread across their faces. This cover of The Cure’s “Just Like Heaven” is a fresh and classic take on such a song synonymous with the post-punk era. This bluegrass cover brings out the party that was hidden underneath the 80’s embossed classic. Check out The Infamous Stringdusters cover below.
This video has debuted in support of the Stringdusters newest studio album Undercover, Vol. 2 EP. The entirety of the album is laden with classic tunes twisted with bluegrass. Other tracks include My Morning Jacket’s “Golden,” Marvin Gaye’s love classic “What’s Going On” and Daft Punk’s world famous dance hit “Get Lucky.”
The Infamous Stringdusters are a bluegrass band of five, forming in Charlottesville, VA in 2006. Their debut album Fork in the Road, released through Sugar Hill Records, was received with wide praise around the globe. In 2007, the Stringdusters also received three extremely prestigious awards from The International Bluegrass Music Association for Artist of the Year, Album of the Year, and Song of the Year. They were also nominated in 2011 for Entertainer of the year.
“Just Like Heaven” is the third single of The Cure’s seventh studio record Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me in 1987 and was one of their later albums that nudged them into the American Billboard Top 40 charts. Check out the classic 1987 version of “Just Like Heaven” below. Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me was the last studio album in which Porl Thompson (keyboard player)would play keys on. Following this album, Thompson focused on guitar parts for the remaining history of The Cure. The album was released in late May of 1987 and was released in the UK through record label Fiction as well as through Elektra in the United States.
