Mark Lanegan Joins Peter Hook On Stage In London To Play Joy Division’s “Atmosphere”

On Monday, Mark Lanegan joined Peter Hook on stage for special encore performance. Lanegan is most well known for his work in the Washington based grunge band Screaming Trees, while Hook is best known for his bass work in the band Joy Division. Joy Division had short lifespan (1976-1980) since their lead vocalist Ian Curtis committed suicide, however their impact on the post-punk music scene lasted far longer. The group reformed as New Order in 19080 and worked their post-punk Joy Division sound into a new electronic dance aesthetic. The band took two hiatuses, but remained a steady influence on the music scene. However, in 2015 Hook sued his bandmates for not distributing royalties fairly. After a two year expensive legal battle, Hook was reimbursed with a settlement in September of this year according to Spin.

Since the legal battle, Hook has focused his time on his other band, Peter Hook and the Light, which he formed in 2010. The band is currently on tour and made a stop at the Roundhouse Theatre this past Monday. The band played their own songs in addition to hits from Joy Division and New Order. During the encore, Hook brought Lanegan out to perform Joy Division’s songs, “Dead Souls,” and “Atmosphere.” Lanegan did Curtis justice as the lead vocalist for both songs.
