Boston hardcore punk band American Nightmare, once known as Give Up the Ghost, is returning from a fifteen year hiatus, with the release of their new self-titled record American Nightmare to be released in February 2018. Teased earlier this month with the caption “February” on their Facebook page, the band is back with their first new record since 2003’s We’re Down Til We’re Underground. Following bassist Josh Holden’s Instagram confirmation, “We made a new record. It will be out in February,” we now have all of the information for their upcoming 2018 release.
Back in 2003, American Nightmare had to legally change their name due to a dispute from a band with the same name in Philadelphia. Going from American Nightmare to A.N., and at one point American Nothing, the band settled on Give Up the Ghost, a name that was intended to be the title of their sophomore LP, and one that had stuck with them all throughout the 2000’s until now. “The enigmatic act may have only released two full-length albums since forming nearly two decades ago,” reads the official press release, “but after temporarily losing their name… the band has returned with a dark hardcore record that pays homage to groups who have always influenced its sound ranging from Negative Approach, SSD, and The Cro-Mags to those extending beyond the realm of hardcore such as Joy Division and Siouxsie And The Banshees.”
“In making this record we had one goal,” said vocalist Wesley Eisold, “To make a hardcore punk album that was true to American Nightmare, who we were then and who we are now… No filler, just existential poetic venom. This is ground zero, a new life for the band.” The new song, “The World is Blue,” is a quick but fierce track, under two minutes, that is set to open the new record. Due out February 16th, 2018 via Rise Records, American Nightmare’s self-titled return is accompanied by the single “The World is Blue,” which can be listened to below, as well as their upcoming tour dates, album artwork, and tracklist for American Nightmare.
