Last night, NYC welcomed Grammy award winning artist Beck to play an intimate event at Spring Studios. Despite the five inches of snow that came down on the city as the first powder of the season, many attended this exclusive intimate event to show their love for Beck.
Spring Studios is a venue known for participating in famous events like the Tribeca film festival and is hidden away in an alley off Tribeca. Upon arrival, guests received a badge for entry and made their way up to the 6th floor after checking their coats. A necessity many took up due to the 30-degree weather.
The 6th floor was setup with ambient blue lights that made it seem like one was walking into an art installation or a pop-up shop. There was a photo booth and decorations of guitars hanging on the wall for photo opportunities.
The biggest bonuses that Hilton offered were the complimentary food and drinks for all. Some of the offerings included chicken and waffles, burgers both vegetarian and beef, and pretzels with pastrami. Even if Beck didn’t perform, it was worth it to attend the event just for this catering.
At the top of the hour, Mark, who represented the Hilton, came out to say a few words to thank everyone for attending. He talked about the Hilton’s rich history with music such as the first Grammy’s award show being held at the Beverly Hilton. After he finished, Beck came out to perform for the crowd. His visuals for the song were very psychedelic and for his opening song it was an intense visual of red. He opened his set with “Devil’s Haircut” which was fitting for what was playing on the screen.
His next song was “Black Tambourine,” to which many people were starting to jump around to. There was a woman in the crowd who proclaimed that this was her favorite song. She proceeded to make her way into the middle of the crowd and disappeared among the clusters of people.
Beck stopped for a moment just to talk to the crowd and ask how everybody was doing. Surprisingly, after he did he played one of his biggest hits: “Loser.” This song got everyone singing along. He then moved on to “Think I’m in Love.” There was a very special moment for New Yorkers in the middle of the set. Beck talked about how he was asked to do a song about New York. He said when he thinks of New York, he thinks about one artist and that’s Lou Reed. Beck and his band proceeded to do a cover of “I’m Waiting For My Man” by the Velvet Underground.
After his cover he asked if people wanted to dance. His next three songs were off his new album. He played “Colors” and then immediately played “Wow” followed by “Up All Night.” He then played “Dreams” and crowd favorite “Girls” off his older albums. He then took the time to introduce his band.
Overall, the concert was a great thank you for long-time fans of Beck who had an incredible treat to be in such an intimate location with him. Anywhere fans stood or sat provided them with a perfect view of the performance.
