Fox News is at it again. In the past, the news conglomerate has received flak for using certain music without artists’ permission as well as because of their seemingly off the cuff reviews of musicians such as Radiohead and Kendrick Lamar. According to music blog Loudwire.com, Fox News has decided to use Power Trip’s music; a thrash metal band based in Dallas, Texas.
During Fox News’ segment The Five discussed Power Trip’s most recent album Nightmare Logic which was released February 24th of 2017. After the discussion of the album, host Greg Gutfield decided to play a small excerpt of Power Trip’s “Executioner’s Tax (Swing of the Axe)” after calling Power Trip “cool band”. The group was obviously not happy about this. In response to the use of their song, the band went on twitter to discuss their feelings about it after their fan told them of Fox News latest venture. Power Trip’s post in response read “CEASE & DESIST” in all caps so as to show their full distaste with Fox. However, knowing Power Trip’s politics, this is hardly unlike them. In the 2017 Loudwire Awards, Power Trip performed a small set in which the spliced footage if the infamous white nationalist Richard Spencer getting punched in the face making it difficult to see how Fox News thought they could play the song unscathed. Nightmare Logic has received worldwide praise from the likes of Pitchfork, Rolling Stone and more. Pitchfork states that “You don’t need to be a metalhead to have a blast with Nightmare Logic. Screamed sardonics, persistent chug, and apocalyptic melodrama are all acquired tastes, sure. But Power Trip’s fist-pumping choruses, ricocheting grooves, and ample charm are so animated that they leave us with something addictive and, well, fun.” Check out our mxdwn review here.
Power Trip was founded in 2008 in Dallas, Texas with members Chris Whetzel (bass), Marcus Johnson (drums), Riley Cayle (vocals), and guitarists Blake Ibanez and Nicky Stewart. 2009 featured their first studio EP Armageddon Blues while their first full-length studio album was released in 2010 as Hammer of Doubt.
In 2009 the band began their first leg of tours throughout California and Texas. In 2012 Power Trip received their first big break, playing Pitchfork’s Music Festival in Chicago which led to their record deal with Southern Lord in 2013. Their current lineup consists of Chriss Whetzel, Chris Ulsh, Blake Ibanez, Nick Stewart, and Riley Gale. Check out Power Trip’s tour here to see if they are playing in a city near you!
