Virginia based metal band, Demons, which originally launched in 2015 with their EP Great Dismal, has just released their debut album. Embrace Wolf is a reckless take on anxiety, resentment, guilt, exhaustion, suppression, misrepresentation, fragility and impatience. Frontman and lyricist, Zach Gehring (vocals, guitar) details personal story through the nine relentless songs. The effect is a therapeutic listen that is both relatable and slightly removed. Gehring says, “We are all haunted by something, be it tangible, imaginary, wild, or within, and we are faced with only two choices — exorcism or embracement. Sometimes one is essential in enabling the other.” The intense but intimate album will bring listeners both hope and despair, but will never cease to be exciting and enjoyable through the highs and the lows.
Gehring, the former guitarist for Mae, is joined by Jonathan Anderson (bass), Drew Orton (drums) and his newest bandmate, Chris Matthews (guitar, backing vocals). On their latest song, “17: 9,” the four rockers create dissonance to sonically recreate the feeling of collision. Each member fills out the song with their respective instruments to create a heavy and dense track. The band combines a Pearl Jam punk aesthetic with a Queens of the Stone Age rocker appeal and a Melvins Metal spin. The result is that they do really sound one-of-a-kind.
