The Wombats Release Monstrously Macabre New Video for “Lemon to a Knife Fight”

The Wombats’ recent single, “Lemon to a Knife Fight,” now has an accompanying video which showcases a heroine and monster. Plot Twist: they are the same person. The video starts on a secluded road with a seemingly monstrous man driving a gagged and handcuffed woman in the back seat. He takes her an empty forrest where he lets her run free. Then he and a few other cultish figures pull out their guns and begin shooting at the woman as she transforms into a werewolf. She exacts her revenge, killing every last one of them. She then hops in the driver’s seat and enjoys a drive on her own. The cinematic video captures the elusive nature of her personality. At times she is in control, and other times she is at the mercy of the men around her. She is scared but also terrifying. The video takes the theme of a toxic relationship and brings it to new heights.

The director, Finn Keenan, said the surreal video was inspired by a campy aesthetic described as “David Lynch meets Power Rangers.” The video blurs the lines of good and bad and focuses more on the theatrically of the experience. It starts off dark and ends ironically when the werewolf turns the table on the hunters: “These hunters do this every month, but this time they picked the wrong werewolf.” David Lynch’s film, Mulholland Drive,  is also connected to the initial source of the song. According to NME, frontman Matthew Murphy wrote the song after fighting with his wife on the infamous Los Angeles street.

The song, which effortlessly and energetically combines elements of electronic, rock, alternative, pop and punk, is a preview into the Liverpool trio’s forthcoming album titled, BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE WILL RUIN YOUR LIFE. The album was written both individually and collectively. Dam Haggis (drums) wrote in London, Tord Øverland Knudsen (bass) wrote in Norway and Matthew Murphy (vocals, guitar) wrote in Los Angeles. The album, which will be filled with lush hooks and emotional lyrics, will be released on February 9th. It follows in the footsteps of their 2015 release, Glitterbug, which was well received on tour and in festivals like Groovin’ The Moo. The band will begin touring their latest album on January 8th.
