Ty Segall Releases Saxophone-Inflected New Song “The Main Pretender”

Ty Segall is on a roll and is showing no signs of slowing down anytime soon. Since 2008, Segall has released nine solo albums in addition to many EP’s, singles, collaborations and work with his other bands FUZZ, Broken Bat and GØGGS. . This year alone, the versatile rocker has released a self-titled album, two EP’s (Fried Shallots and Sentimental Goblin), new music video for “Break A Guitar,” and three singles (“Alta,” and “Meaning,” “My Lady’s On Fire,”). Now, the Laguna-Beach based musician has released another single titled, “The Main Pretender.” Perhaps what is even more astounding than the quantity of his work, is the quality. Each release continues to surprise even the most loyal fans. He remains unpredictable, skipping over through and in between different genres and influences.

His latest release, “The Main Pretender,” is no exception. Instead of using a guitar for the unrelenting melody, Segall thought outside the box and brought in Mikal Cronin to play saxophone. The saxophone driven melody really shakes things up. It is inventive and unique and used in an unconventional way. Cronin breaks down the barriers of what you thought the saxophone was possible of achieving. He hits inconceivable notes that even Louis Armstrong would be amazed by. The saxophone is aided by a constant and catchy bass line. The song uses a retro groovy aesthetic with touches of more contemporary electronic influences. The song is aggressive in the most friendly way possible-like the hyperactive dog from Up that insists on helping Carl and Russell find the illusive snipe. Segall is sure to follow up the track with many more one-of-a-kind hits soon!
