The Big Pink Releases Cover of New Order’s “Blue Monday”

In the wake of their early glimpse at “How Far We’ve Come,” UK indie band, The Big Pink, has released cover of New Order’s 80s hit “Blue Monday.” The double sided single has been released to promote the Blank City Records’ event also titled Blue Monday.

The event, which will be hosted in Echo Park today (November 27th) from noon to 8 pm, centers around the promotion and recognition of local independent artists and record companies. Marc Sallis, co-founder of Blank City Records, argues that the event is “a reaction to,” major labels dominating the vinyl market which has always been historically independent. He hopes the event will help raise awareness for indie artists who are often overshadowed in the vinyl market lately. Black City Records will also welcome local label, Chainletter Collective and Lolipop Records, to the event. The event is all ages, and free for everyone.

The Big Pink will be at the event to perform their new songs along with other sonic and visual artists. For those who can’t attend, “How Far We’ve Come,” is available digitally today before it is released on a limited vinyl. “Blue Monday,” is free on soundcloud for the next 24 hours, and then will be released digitally.

“Blue Monday,” once again showcases The Big Pink’s ability to combine rock with electronic influences seamlessly. The original song, performed by the pioneering 80s British synth pop band New Order, combines an electronic aesthetic with disco and club beats. It was groundbreaking at the time. Now, The Big Pink has modernized it further while still maintaining its classic roots. The song is slowed down and infused with infinity more rock-centric sounds such as the vibrant guitar riffs used to respond to the call of the chilling vocals, the driving drum beat and the steady and filled out bass line. The bass is so thick it that it creates a sonic soundscape for the rest of the members to rise above. The song is a bit darker than the original. It is a good glimpse into what the rest of The Big Pink’s third album will sound like. Fans can check them out on at Blank City Presents… The Nightmare Before Xmas Showcase on December 17th.
