Björk Details Lost Homogenic-Era Collaboration with Wu-Tang Clan

This past Friday, Björk released her latest album titled, Utopia. While discussing the album with Fact, the Icelandic expiermental-pop artist revealed that at she once collaborated with the iconic hip-hop group, Wu-Tang Clan.

Nearly twenty years ago when the singer was working on Homogenic, she reached out to the group for help on some beats. The singer was struggling to create the right king of “volcanic beat,” and was growing impatient with her own process. So, she reached out to the East coast rapper, RZA (who is a part of Wu-Tang Clan), and asked for help. The rapper agreed to come to Spain to help her finish the album. After months passed with no musical rendezvous, Björk decided to finish the album herself.

Soon after the albums release, RZA finally connected with her. Even though she had already finished the album, she went to New York to write with RZA. They wrote serveral brilliant songs together, but never went forward recording it because Björk felt it wasn’t right for either of their aesthetics at the time: “…sometimes when you do things and you don’t plan them it’s magic. And I really think what we made was magic. But I think because it wasn’t part of the whole Homogenic thing and it wasn’t part of what Wu-Tang were doing at the time, it was better as an idea.”

According to Stereogum, the two remained friends and hung out together on other occasions. In the interview Björk expresses her respect and admiration for the group’s perspective and “punk” attitude.
