True Feelings From Postpartum Depression
Ella Vos, pronounced “ehya vos” in Spanish which means she/you, dives into new realms with the release of her first independent album, Words I Never Said. The indie pop singer-songwriter from LA is untraditional on trend with up and coming artists. The young Vos released her first single, “White Noise,” in 2016 receiving praise from Rolling Stone and Neon Gold.
What seemed to feel so distant yet familiar, “White Noise” was sought out to be just another love song. On the contrary, Vos shook the music industry when she revealed it was actually about her first child, the new idea of motherhood and the even scarier issue of postpartum depression.
The soothing melodies Vos carries out with her gospel tones could remind one of Frou Frou, IAMX or Imogen Heap. The 14 million streamed video for “White Noise” is only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the depth and reality Vos brings to her listeners.
“You Don’t Know About Me” not only battles the choice of pro-life or pro-choice, but it blends the lines of pop, indie rock and techno all in one melody. Each song comes with a new vibe and a whole new meaning. “Little Brother” being about her somewhat fading relationship with her younger sibling, has a foundation of catchy rhythms and a heart-pounding beat. “In Your Corner” starts off slow with a melodic guitar riff and Vos’s gospel-esque voice. The song breaks out of its shell and delivers a heart-wrenching tribute to teamwork based off of a soft beat and simple, but meaningful lyrics, “Could have done more / Should have been there / No more wasting precious time / ‘Cause I’ll stand in your corner.”
Independently releasing her own album gave Vos the flexibility to make her music her own. There is a cliché associated with having a family and a full-time job, some thinking you can’t have one if you have the other. Ella Vos puts a stop to that hoax and proves that anything is possible when you truly put your heart and soul into it. She’s a mother of a two-year-old boy, a wife and a bad-ass spokesperson for women all around the world.
