After going live in 2008, a Toronto trio of producers and performers wanted to create their own distinctive twist on electronic music. Turntablist Jr. Flo (Greg Dawson), Keyboardist David Matisse, and drummer Adam Tune all shared the same mindset of creating the perfect remixes and original electronic tracks containing flawless synths and 808s.
However, they did not always start this way. The three originally began as a live hip-hop act, but eventually evolved into what they are today. They are now perfectionists focused on paving their own lane in the electronic music scene, relying on each other for every aspect of the creation process. Jr. Flo has explained in the past, “We exchange roles from song to song”. From sampling, to melody construction to even input on mixing a track, every member has something to say. This is a character trait that often slows the trio down, but also keeps them thorough.
With award nominated cuts like “Dum Dee Dum”, or the catchy “Are We Faded”, or even the collab with Grandtheft “Keep It 100”, Keys N Krates constantly pushes their sound while still creating bangers. A mix of hip-hop, house, and UK bass music plays a major role in the sound and style of Keys N Krates. Citing M83 as a major influence, the electronic/hip-hop group combines their skills as musicians with typical EDM elements like live remixes, to create a unique concert experience. With 5 EPs and a long list of singles, the group has a very solid discography, even without a major album release.
The mindset of the trio is to not be your typical EDM act. During their live shows, they come across more of a band, rather than an energy-filled festival DJ. While there is still a great deal of energy within the group’s music and their performances, they release it in a much different way. Keys N Krates prefers to keep you wondering. They enjoy arousing thought within their listeners, such as how they sampled a song or composed a beat.
These special and talented producers can be seen live at the Concord next year in March on their “Cura Tour”, bringing along Jubilee and Promnite. The doors open at 8 PM, and tickets only start at $20. With anyone 17 and over allowed for this show, the price is great to see such a brilliant group.
