The last few weeks have been a series of he said she said for the band Crystal Castles. Former member, Alice Glass (Margaret Osborn) initially took to Twitter to release a statement regarding her bandmate, Ethan Kath’s (Claudio Palmieri), alleged abuse against her. In her statement she outlined over decade worth of alleged abuse from the musician. Glass left the band in 2014 for both “professional and personal” reasons. She continued as a solo artist released a self-titled EP in 2015. The proceeds of the single “Stillbirth,” were put towards survivors of domestic abuse and sexual violence. It wasn’t until this past month though, that Glass detailed the personal reasons she left the band. She argued that while she felt afraid and silenced before, the recent outcry of survivors has encouraged her to speak out: “The momentum that’s been created recently by the many courageous women who have opened up about their own stories has inspired me to finally be more direct, at whatever cost.”
Kath responded with his own statement and perspective on the alleged events. Kath refuted Glass’s claims, describing them as “pure fiction.” Kath argued that Glass released the accusations as a way to destroy the band, and promote her own work. Kath, who has suffered “emotional distress,” as a result of the allegations, went on to say: “I will continue to support her quest to wellness but I can’t support extortion, false claims, and accusations put forth after the band attained new success without her.” Crystal Castles, who have been performing with the help of new vocalist Edith Frances since 2015, have since bee let go from their management and booking agencies. Several of their tour dates have been cancelled as well.
Kath has gone on to sue Glass for defamation since the allegations have surfaced. After Glass’s November 17th performance at the 30 Days in Chicago Festival, a “fan” approached Glass and served her the summons papers.
Hopefully the truth will out at their upcoming trial.
