AWOLNATION @ Aragon Ballroom (2/14)

After recently announcing their newest album Here Come the Runts will debut on February 2nd, AWOLNATION has also revealed they will be touring with Nothing But Thieves to promote the new project. Being one of the first few dates on the tour, Chicago fans will be able to see the band fresh-off the release of their album, giving them a first-hand look at the new music live.

AWOLNATION began as a solo project for lead singer Aaron Bruno when he needed an outlet to escape the creative process of his other bands. Bruno, who spends much of his time surfing in addition to creating music, conceived AWOLNATION in Los Angeles, California in 2009. There have been many members since the beginning, but is currently comprised of four members: Aaron Bruno (vocals/guitar), Isaac Carpenter (drums/backing vocals), Zach Irons (lead guitar), Daniel Saslow (keys).

In 2011 the band made their debut with Megalithic Symphony, released through “Red Bull Records”. The album went platinum in the United States, and was even more successful in other countries. The success of the album can largely be attributed their biggest song to date, “Sail”. The song is now platinum in several different countries, including Canada and the United States. In 2015 they released their follow-up album Run, along with many remixes and singles over the years.

However, their success is not only limited to their singles and album sales. The electropop band is also well-known for their cover of “I’m on Fire” by Bruce Springsteen. The cover landed on the Fifty Shades of Grey soundtrack, which was one of the biggest films of that year.

Wanting to have more creative freedom, and mixing electronic sounds with live instrumentation, Bruno created AWOLNATION. As the architect of the group, Bruno freely blends elements of rock with elements of electronic music. Because of this, AWOLNATION is often categorized as alternative rock, electropop, synth-pop, indie rock, or dance-rock. However, according to Bruno on Here Come the Runts, he really wanted to make a “rock n’ roll/pop album”. Therefore, fans may see the band take a different direction on their newest album.

This will truly be a special show for Chicago as they are one of the first stops on the band’s tour, and are scheduled just 10 days after the band’s album is set to be released. The doors will open at 6 PM, and the show will begin at 8 PM.
