Sonny Smith Signs to Dan Auerbach’s Easy Eye Label and Announces New Album Rod of Your Love for March 2018 Release

One of San Francisco’s most enduring underground artists, Sonny Smith (known for his work with Sonny and the Sunsets) has announced the release date for his next album, to be titled Rod of Your Love. The album will be released on Black Keys member Dan Auerbach’s growing record label Easy Eye, and will be out on March 2, 2018. He joins a growing roster of artists that includes fellow Bay Area punks Shannon and the Clams. Along with the new album, Smith has released a video for the song “Pictures of You.”

The song features a fuzzy melodic guitar lick that leads into a palm muted chorus that screams present-day San Francisco psych rock. The video begins with Smith painting caricatures on glass at the seaside. Eventually his work is washed into the sea as the video transitions to clips of children, as the song says, “when you were young.” The song is the lead track from Rod of Your Love, a promising release from an experienced songwriter who has somehow managed to fly under the radar of the national indie rock consciousness for the last few years, but is certainly deserving of more widespread acclaim.
