Brooklyn noise pop duo Sleigh Bells burst onto the scene back in 2010 with Treats, making name for themselves as the most unapologetically obnoxious (in the best way possible) band. The band’s recently released mini-album Kid Kruschev, however, seems to continue the direction they took with 2016’s Jessica Rabbit and look towards a slightly less abrasive sound.
The band’s first single from the record, “And Saints,” embodies this subdued change in sonic aesthetic more than any other, with its continued palm-muted power chords and light synth pads that tease toward catharsis throughout the entire track, but fade out in an uncharacteristic show of restraint.
To accompany this track, the duo has also just released a new music video for “And Saints,” translating the softened song to film. In a surreal clash of styles, Alexis Krauss sings in an empty school gymnasium in a 50’s housewife’s dress and makeup, backed by a headbanging, leather-clad metal band. Around the 1:10 minute mark, the video takes a My Chemical Romance “Teenagers”-esque turn as cheerleaders walk in to the gym, and start dancing as they don skull masks. Needless to say, the video is quite the experience.
