This past Monday Meek Mill was sentenced between 2 to 4 years in prison for a multitude of parole violations as well as two arrests (although those charges were both dropped). The Fader writes that Mill’s parole violations included failed drug tests and performing outside Philadelphia without the permission of the court. Judge Genece Brinkley sentenced Mill to jail time even though the state prosecutors recommended against it. In following the news surrounding Meek Mill’s new jail time sentence, Billboard has released timeline of Mill’s past charges
After Judge Brinkley’s sentence, Meek Mill’s lawyer Joe Tacopina spoke to TMZ about a past back-and-forth involving the judge and Meek Mill. Tacopina states to TMZ that Brinkley asked Mill to remake a Boyz II Men song, but Mill said no. Tacopina then told Billboard that the judge requested Meek Mill should leave his contract with Roc Nation and sign to her friend’s management company instead. This past Thursday, November 2nd, Tacopina spoke to The Fader over the phone discussing the misconduct of Judge Genece Brinkley. He stated that he and his team will request that Brinkley recuse herself from the upcoming appeal process due to her possible animosity she holds towards Mill. He says, “Based on her conduct over the years, we knew there was an issue. His probation was supposed to end in 2013, and here it is, nearly 2018, and he’s still on the probation for technical violations, travel violations – just doing work, which nobody gets violated for. It’s allowed her to extend her control over him for another five years.
Tacopina even comes forth saying that Nicki Minaj was a witness to when Brinkley asked Mill to remake Boyz II Men’s “On Bended Knee.” The exchange between the two apparently happened in February of 2016 right around the time Brinkley sentenced Mill to 90 days house arrest for parole violations. What makes this newsworthy among everything else happening in the world is that this seems to be a case in which someone of a higher position in the justice system is using their power to get what they want – corruption.
The Fader’s courtroom report from February of 2016 states that Brinkley actually paused the proceedings to ask Meek Mill and Nicki Minaj to come to her chambers to discuss something in private. Nicki Minaj would not speak to the court about what she witnessed but when asked if she would support him during these proceedings she responded affirmatively.
Tacopina also reported that they would indeed be using the judge’s alleged misconduct reports in the upcoming case and that there will be no need for the use of any witnesses in the courtroom appeal. Currently, Tacopina and Mill have begun the appeal process and will ask the court their request to recuse Judge Brinkley from the case.
