Quicksand Release Ominous New Video for “Interiors”

Quicksand, those legends of 90s post-hardcore, are back with a new album titled Interiors later this month. Today they have released the title track from that album along with a music video. Like the first two singles from the upcoming album “Illuminant” and “Cosmonauts,” “Interiors” proves these alternative stalwarts have not lost a step in the decades since their last release together (which was 1995’s Manic Compression).

The video cuts between radiating geometric patterns and clips of flocking birds moving about the screen – while each individual clip may not seem threatening, the result is an ominous visual that is well-suited for the spacey vibe put forth by “Interiors.” The mid-tempo song runs through several transitions, keeping the listener engaged until the dramatic build-up of the song’s conclusion.

Quicksand was formed from members of prominent 80s New York City hardcore bands like Gorilla Biscuits and Youth of Today. They peddled a sound with much more mainstream potential, and in the wild-west of the post-Nirvana alternative explosion, many major label executives saw them as a group that could break through commercially. Unfortunately they never quite did, though they did release two excellent albums that would go on to influence a later wave of post-hardcore bands in the 00s.

Frontman Walter Schreifels would go on to form another new band in the wake of Quicksand’s breakup, Rival Schools. That band also flirted with popular success but could never become the huge rock band some hoped they would be. Lately, Schreifels has been involved with his garage-psych group Dead Heavens, who released the excellent LP Whatever Witch You Are earlier this year.

The band has been on tour this fall, with hiccup coming after their guitarist was arrested for shoplifting in Arizona. He was removed from the tour and replaced so the band could continue on with the shows.
