mxdwn PREMIERE: Ché Aimee Dorval Releases New Video for “Buried” and Announces Pre-Order Campaign for New Album

After making haunting country-rock magic with Devin Townsend as Casualties of Cool, singer-songwriter Ché Aimee Dorval is gearing up for the release of a new solo LP titled Between The Walls and The Window. The album will be released on December 8, 2017 and the first single is “Buried.” Today, we are excited to premiere the video for the lead single as well as announce the PledgeMusic-driven pre-order campaign for Between The Walls and The Window.

The themes of repression dealt with in the lyrics of “Buried” are of particular relevance in this time when people, especially women, have been empowered to confront their abusers. She alludes to men governing her body’s purpose, confronting the fact that the birth control and abortion debate have become a more fiercely debated topic lately.

The video features Dorval being guided through her morning routine by sets of arms — they decide when she wakes up, apply her makeup, put on her clothes. During the chorus of “Buried” she sings about seas of voices and egos — drowning, crowding and burying her: “On through the sea / Of voices drowning me / I get lost and left behind / On through the sea / Of egos crowding me / I get buried every time.”

The movements are well-choreographed to the shuffling pace of “Buried” as the vocalist moves throughout her day. She is eventually shoved into the back-door of a nightclub by a pair of the arms, taking the stage to perform the song’s powerhouse conclusion. The video was directed by Lara Blacklock; the executive producer and cinematographer is Alex Torres.

Between The Walls and The Window is Dorval’s second full-length release, following up the 2009 release Underachiever and six-song EP Volume One in 2014. That same year saw the release of Casualties of Cool, which was crowd-funded through PledgeMusic. A formal, full release in 2016 introduced the duo to wider audiences and reached number one on our Best Albums of 2016 list (a couple songs from the album also ranked highly on our Best Songs of 2016 list).

Dorval will also have two performances coming up, both in Vancouver, BC. One is the album release show, which has a mystery special guest.
