Courtney Barnett and Kurt Vile – Lotta Sea Lice

 A Quirky Conversation
The dynamic duo of Australian quirky singer-song writer Courtney Barnett and American
smooth talking singer-song writer Kurt Vile give us an easy-breezy (beautiful) nine-track LP just in the nick of time. Barnett and Vile have both made an impact on the indie-rock world, with their solo work and Vile’s work with The War on Drugs.
Each artist, both being in their 30s, are relatively young to be creating on such a thought-provoking level. Barnett has released two LP’s and a debut album prior to the release of this collaboration, and Vile has released six studio albums. The pair are a force to be reckoned with, and will no doubt shake up the indie-rock/folk world.
The album, Lotta Sea Lice, is the closest thing fans can get to sitting down with the two to listen in on their witty back and forth banter about life and love. The opening track, “Over Everything” is the ironic comparison of how they both find creativity. The harmony of their powerful yet subtle voices is a lullaby accompanied by the smooth sound of guitar. The next track, “Let It Go” begins with the line “What time do you usually wake up? / Depends on what time I sleep.” This is a beautifully poetic way to start a song that is truly about living life in whatever way you see fit. The technicolor sound of the unfamiliar yet familiar lyrics soothes as the guitar sets in.
“Continental Breakfast” and “Outta the Woodwork” are hazy, gentle reminders that listeners should take a road-trip soon. The pacifying sound of the drums, guitars and our beloved stars voices harmonize in a way that makes one forget why they started reading this article in the first place. The nine tracks together are a solid 42 minutes of sweet, melancholy goodness.
