Closeness – Personality Therapy

An Otherworldly Listening Experience

Personality Therapy is the debut EP from the duo Closeness. The duo consists of husband and wife Todd and Orenda Fink, both of whom have had their own success in the music industry before deciding to team up. Todd, a former member of the Faint, and Orenda, former member of Azure Ray, decided to form Closeness after Orenda had recovered from complications during a routine surgical procedure. Their experience as artists shines brightly on their debut EP and gives listeners plenty of reason to be excited about future projects.

Personality Therapy is only six tracks long and features an otherworldly sound. There is heavy use of synths and vocal distortions. At times the project can feel extremely dark but there are some lighter tracks that balance out the dark feel.

The opening track and single from the EP, “More Romantic,” jumps right into the ethereal feel that’s present throughout the EP. The track features light airy vocals distorted electric guitars and makes great use of melodic synths. The song is very dreamlike and pleasant.

There is a stark contrast on the next track, “End of Maze” which takes a much darker tone. The song hauntingly beautiful and the vocal distortion take the tone on the EP from dreamlike to nightmarish. The song still maintains its use of melodic synths, which sound a lot thicker on “End of Maze.”

On the next track “Just His Eyes,” the lighter tone returns and the track feels more dreamlike. The vocals are still distorted but sound more airy and less thick than how the were on “End of Maze.” The vocals are layered beautifully over the thick melodic synths which make this track easily the strongest on the entire EP.

The gets gradually darker throughout the rest of the EP and Closeness uses the vocal distortions and thick distorted synths to create their otherworldly sound. The EP ends on a darker tone with the track entitled “Personality Therapy.” The track features a very gritty sound but there is less vocal distortion than what is present on some of the other tracks on the EP. The hauntingly beautiful vibe is once again reached on the final track of the EP.

Overall Personality Therapy is an EP that shows a lot of promise for a bright future from the husband and wife duo. Their combined experience in the music industry make this a project that is definitely worth a listen.
