Chris Cornell’s Rare Poncier Cassette from Singles To See Vinyl and Tape Release on Black Friday Record Store Day 2017

Fans of the late Chris Cornell, be on the look out for a rare cassette from Chris Cornell on the Black Friday edition of Record Store Day. The cassette will feature music from the movie Singles.

If you remember from the movie, The five-song cassette had five fake song titles, “Seasons”, “Nowhere but You”, “Spoonman”, “Flutter Girl” and “Missing” – Chris Cornell, who made a wordless cameo as a guy watching Poncier, was asked to play the main character but did not have the time. The role ended up being played by Matt Dillon.

Chris wrote and recorded songs based on those seemingly random titles. “Spoonman” became a hit for Soundgarden, “Seasons” and “Nowhere but You” were included on the Singles soundtrack, “Flutter Girl” was on his later solo album Euphoria Morning and “Missing” was only ever released on an earlier version of the Poncier EP.

Due to the fact that Cornell could not take the role, he made it up to the director by giving him what turned out to be a large gift. Pearl Jam band members Jeff Ament, Eddie Vedder and Stone Gossard backed “Poncier” as the fake band Citizen Dick. The band made a joke track-list, which later became a Poncier’s solo cassette.

Chris Cornell ended up turning that tracklist into real music. Impressed by the work, director Cameron Crow decided to add one song to the soundtrack album, and included another in the film. The complete Poncier EP was released as a promotional CD through Real Clever Records, which was a fake label revived for 2015’s Record Store Day.

The tape is being released again for this years record store day. If you want to get the new cassette, you’ll have to be quick. Their will only be 1500 copies available, as well 4000 vinyl copies. Also check out the tape track list below.
