Don’t miss the opportunity to witness a piece of R&B history live, as one of the most legendary R&B/Soul groups of the 1980s and 90s bring their smooth vibrations to Chicago. The trio Tony! Toni! Toné! is bringing their talents to The Promontory this Friday night.
From their early beginnings in Oakland, California, to their final official album as a group, House of Music, these music pioneers made a name for themselves and etched it in R&B history. Tony! Toni! Toné! is now is made up of Amar Khalil (vocals), Dwayne Wiggins (guitarist/vocalist), and Dwayne’s cousin Timothy Riley (drummer). After their final album in 1996, some members decided to turn into solo acts, thus, Amar Khalil stepped in for Dwayne Wiggins’ brother who was formerly the lead vocalist. Over the years the band broke through on a mainstream level, went on to sell millions of records, and is now a multiplatinum selling group.
For most listeners during the 80s and 90s, the appeal of Tony! Toni! Toné! was their influential, rare, and hybrid sound that eventually shaped the genre of R&B into what it is today. The creative sounds of Tony! Toni! Toné! related to rap and hip hop in some instances, but there was still a strong side of singing and live instrumentation, giving them the ability to draw large audiences. They impacted not only the universal R&B music scene, but also influenced the bay area and the music scene there as well.
Tonight, you can surely expect the talented trio to perform cuts from their critically acclaimed and final album before disbanding, House of Music. As well as, the hits that everyone knows and loves such as “Little Walter”, “It Never Rains (In Southern California)”, “Whatever You Want”, and of course “Feels Good”.
Come see one of R&B’s best at The Promontory, a “starry-lit wine and Jazz bar” nestled in Hyde Park. A few smooth tunes, soulful grooves, and Tony! Toni! Toné! is everything you’ll need to make your night memorable.
