Elliot Moss is a rising star in the indie pop world at just 21 years of age, releasing a self-produced LP in 2015 titled Highspeeds and a new EP titled Boomerang. Today, mxdwn has the premiere of a live in-studio performance of the closing song from that album, “Falling Down and Getting Hurt.” Along with his bandmates Devin Collins, Noah Kellman, and Evan Marien creating a jazzy piece of electronic pop that bolsters Moss’s captivating, soulful vocal delivery.
Hailing from a small town in the northern suburbs of New York City, it’s no surprise Moss is a musicians. He is the third generation in a family made up of musicians and artists, and wrote his first song at the age of 13. As a high-school kid writing and recording his debut album at a home studio he built from making money building websites, Moss always presumed music would be a fun outlet in his spare time. Fast forward just a few years later and his songs have racked up millions of streams on Spotify.
While the opening measures of “Falling Down and Getting Hurt” would lead the listener to believe they were in for a soothing, coffee-house sort of vibe throughout would be surprised by the grooving crescendo Moss and company reach at the conclusion of the song. With Moss leaving his keyboards to pick up the six-string for a simple but stirring guitar solo, piercing through pulsating dance beat that he and has band gradually built around themselves through the use of electronic and analog instrumentation. Unsurprisingly, Moss has been compared to some of the biggest names in the underground world like James Blake and Bon Iver.
The title of the song sounds like a bit of a bummer, but the affirming repition of the chorus (“I get back up / Yeah I get back up again”) is just one sign that the song is in fact meant to be the “big flourish of the album.” Moss also describes the song as a way to “galvanize a re-association with our world.” For this musician, the songwriting process is a catharsis, something he describes as being “therapeutic.” He goes on to elaborate how he hopes his music will affect listeners: “If someone else is in the same place I was when I wrote these songs, I hope they can listen to the record and reach some resolutions quicker than I did.”
Moss has several tour dates lined up over the last few months of 2017.
