Earlier this month, East Buffalo rapper and recent Shady signee Westside Gunn announced a new collaborative project with celebrated rapper MF DOOM, titled WESTSIDEDOOM.
“It’s official WESTSIDEDOOM is here prod by ALCHEMIST & DARINGER this is one of the illest projects I’ve ever heard when u think ART, this is it the RAWEST, FLYEST, GRIMIEST shit you’ve ever heard IN YA LIFE wats dope than FLYGOD & DOOM spread the gospel the day is soon comet,” he wrote on Instagram.
While the project is yet to announce a release date, the first single has arrived in the form of “Gorilla Monsoon.” With the beats being covered by Daringer, DOOM completely goes in, focusing on his characteristically cerebral and multisyllabic verse.
As usual, DOOM operates within his own universe, but Westside Gunn is a exciting match for him. His rhymes are more precise and pointed compared to DOOM’s loose stream of consciousness-esque writing, and his voice is a full octave higher, providing a dynamic that remains engaging throughout the song..
At the moment, it seems like WESTSIDEDOOM is apparently only two songs, according to Westside Gunn in a new interview.
“It didn’t have to be a full album or what not to make a point,” explained Gunn. “The two songs we have, those are art pieces to me. From MF DOOM and his management’s standpoint, it made a whole lot of sense and they’ve already thrown the respect at me. So after all that, I hit up Alchemist and Daringer. I told Daringer first and he cooked up a joint and that was it. Then we sent Alchemist’s joint and it was just magic. With this WESTSIDEDOOM shit, I honestly feel from what I did and what he did on those two songs with Alchemist and Daringer, niggas is in trouble and the whole world is about to understand what I’m saying.”
In other news, for the past two months, DOOM has been releasing a new song every week through Adult Swim as part of a project called The Missing Notebook Rhymes. Earlier today, Adult Swim had apparently suddenly ended the partnership with no explanation, removing all seven of the songs that they’d already premiered.
