The colorful band, Caribou, has just released a 30 second teaser clip of a song on their Twitter page. The clip features a blurry rainbow icon surrounded by black rectangle. The song itself is energetic, upbeat, and slightly unsettling.
Caribou started releasing music back in 2001 under the stage name Manitoba. However due to a lawsuit, he was forced to change his name. Caribou has since released 6 distinctive studio albums and a slew of singles. The band consists of Dan Snaith (vocals, guitar, keyboard, drums, flutophone), Ryan Smith (guitar, keyboards), Brad Weber (drums) and John Schmersal (vocals, bass). While all members contribute to some groundbreaking live performances, Snaith is the only member to record for the band.
In 2012, Snaith began recording new music under the name Daphni. He still recorded as and toured with Caribou in addition to this new project though.It remains unclear why Snaith does not record under a single identity, but it may have to do with his diverse music interests. Caribou is usually more inspired by psychedelic rock while Daphni takes its cue from dance based music.
Lately, Daphni has seemed to be his priority. Under this moniker he released a 2017 studio album titled Fabriclive 93. He also teamed up with other artists for 2017 collaboration called Tactus Tempus. On the other hand, Caribou has not released music since 2015. They have primarily focused on touring over the past couple years at festivals like Northside. However, this recent clip is an indicator that Snaith may have something new up his sleeve for the band.
