As the tenth anniversary of Tegan and Sara’s seminal breakthrough record The Con approaches, the Canadian duo have decided to celebrate the occasion with quite some flair. They have decided to invite a variety of artists, who were either or outspoken proponents for LGBTQ+ rights or LGBTQ+ themselves, and asked them to each cover one song from the record.
The Con X: Covers was announced to be dropping October 20th, with a vinyl edition soon following in late December. The artists on the record include Jack Antonoff of Bleachers (“Burn Your Life Down”), Sara Bareilles (“Floorplan”), CHVRCHES (“Call It Off”), and Paramore’s Hayley Williams (“Nineteen”).
“As the 10th anniversary of The Con approached, Sara and I started to brainstorm meaningful ways to celebrate what was easily one of our most important records,” Tegan announced in a note on the duo’s website. “Almost immediately we established that a tour playing all 14 songs in a more intimate and stripped-down arrangement would be memorable for our diehard fans. But we also wanted a companion piece that would live on past the anniversary, hence The Con X: Covers album was born.”
Tegan went on to explain that they wished the proceeds to go directly to the Tegan and Sara Foundation, which raises money for self-identified women in the LGBTQ community. All of the artists involved agreed to the project and their labels had all agreed to waive their fees as well.
The Con was Tegan and Sara’s fifth record, and their major breakthrough album from 2007. The LP featured singles like “Back in Your Head” and “The Con.” It was their first to chart on the Billboard 200 with its peak at No. 34. Since, the duo has even hit No. 3 on the same chart with 2013’s Heartthrob.
Along with the covers album, the Canadian duo will also be celebrating The Con‘s anniversary with an accompanying tour that will see the sisters playing all 14 songs “in a more intimate and stripped-down arrangement.” The run of dates kicks off Oct. 20 in San Diego.
