American blues and gospel singer Mavis Staples will be partnering with long-time collaborator Jeff Tweedy, writer and producer for the album, for their upcoming project If All I Was Was Black. The album will be released on Nov. 17 via Anti.
“I’ve always thought of art as a political statement in and of itself—that it was enough to be on the side of creation and not destruction,” Staples said. “But there is something that feels complicit at this moment in time about not facing what is happening in this country head on. You can’t stop me. You can’t break me. I’m too loving. These songs are going to change the world.”
You’ll also be able to catch the singer on tour with american folk legend Bob Dylan, as the soulful duo are going on a month long tour across the United States beginning this October. The trek will open in Valley Center, CA and end on the east coast in Boston, MA. Check below for the entire tour itinerary.
This won’t be Staples and Dylan’s first rodeo together, since performing last year at The Mann in Philadelphia, PA. Other collaborators with Mavis Staples include Arcade Fire for their song “I Give You Power,” and in the Gorillaz’s track entitled “Let Me Out.”
