For years Van William has been a leader of indie bands like Port O’Brien and WATERS, crafting simple, melodic and memorable pop songs. Now he is embarking on his own solo project with a debut EP titled The Revolution due out on Friday, September 8. Today we premiere the second track to be released from the album, “Never Had Enough of You” and its accompanying video.
“Never Had Enough of You” opens with the titular refrain in pure vocal harmonization as a headphones-clad William performs an intense dance singing along with the words. Standing in a deserted road in the hills of Los Angeles, a woman appears in the background, mimicking the moves of William and wearing nothing but shoes and a one-piece bathing suit. That woman is actually a friend of William, Laura Burhenn of indie darlings, The Mynabirds. William’s dance moves are emotional and facial expressions intense and while the themes are heavy, musically the song is wonderfully crafted alternative pop with just a bit of an alt-country influence.
“Never Had Enough Of You” is about the claustrophobia and anxiety that can arise when two people share too much of each other’s lives,” said William. “”The feeling of constantly being in each other’s orbit while never feeling the intimacy that used to be there. The blurred lines between romance and companionship, lover and friend. I wanted the video to represent that in a dreamlike way.”
William explain the meaning of the mysterious dancer behind him: “I’m too much in my own world to even notice there is someone else there in the alleyway, dancing along with me.”
William (nee Pierszalowski) released the title track, which features Klara Söderberg and Johanna Söderberg of First Aid Kit, from the four-song release earlier this month on NPR Music.
The Revolution EP was recorded in Stinson Beach, CA. Speaking to William’s experience in the alt-pop scene, the EP features several guest musicians like drummer Griffin Goldsmith of Dawes, bassist Chris Chu of The Morning Benders and of course the Söderbergs from First Aid Kit.
