The Leicester based indie alt rock outfit Kasabian has released a new music video for their single “III Ray (The King).” The track came from the band’s last record For Crying Out Loud, which saw its UK release earlier this year in May, landing them their 5th UK #1 record. The album is now available on all digital streaming platforms in the US, and will be releasing a physical version via Third Man Records on September 1st.
The new video was entirely written and conceived by the band’s frontman Serge Pizzorno and brings the impressive three-time Emmy Award Nominated actress Lena Headey to the screen, who is most well known for her role as Queen Cersei in the critically acclaimed Game of Thrones. But instead of playing royalty this time, Headey brings back royalty from the dead.
The video features Headey’s character as she uses an occult, magic ritual to resurrect King Richard III in a Leicester parking lot, referencing how the actual skeleton of Richard III was exhumed in a city council parking lot in Leicester back in 2012. Once the King returns, Headey takes him on a wild trip through the city, including a stop at a local pub.
The track itself is the pinnacle of braggadocio, taking the “self-aggrandizement of the best hip hop diss tracks and [delivering] it with a fistful of Leicester-bred piss-taking.”
In promotion of For Crying Out Loud earlier this year, Pizzorno said of the LP: “I decided to give myself six weeks to write an album like they used to do back in the day and that became really inspiring.”
“I made sure there was no fat on anything,” Pizzorno continued. “It was going to be classic songs, no self-indulgence, nothing was going on there that shouldn’t. I’d heard Berry Gordy had said if you’ve not got them in the first four bars then you’re finished, so I went in with this old school attitude of songwriting.”
