Most people know Suzanne Santo as the leading lady of the LA-based folk-country duo also known as HONEYHONEY. But the singer-songwriter and champion violinist has now ventured solo with her newly released album called Ruby Red. It’s an album that deeply explores life and love, while still exuding Santo’s energetic, sultry passion. The album was produced by Butch Walker.
While Santo has one of those voices that’s destined for creating harmonies, she’s just as strong as a main singer. Tracks like “Ghost in My Bed” and “Handshake” are the prime hitters, but there’s a strength to each of her songs–tracks that aren’t necessarily sugar-polite in that gracious folky way, but instead go right for it with titles like “Yours or Mine” and “Love Fucked Up.” There’s a definite drama to her lyrical approach, and whatever it is she’s singing about is sure to hit a soft spot (but not in an overly sentimental way–but in a badass whiskey chick with a major voice kind of way).
Playing New York City is just one of very few upcoming shows for Suzanne Santo, but that certainly will not be the case forever, for once Ruby Red really gets kicking, it’ll surely strike everywhere.
