New-York based ensemble Object Collection will be presenting It’s All True, an opera based on the music of post-hardcore band Fugazi. The band gave them the thumbs up to use their music archive, which includes audio of heartfelt activist speeches, violent police invasions of their live shows, and sporadic tracks of drum solos and guitar feedback.
According to vocalist and guitarist Guy Picciotto, the whole band was “both blown away and disoriented by the work” and “moved by Object Collection’s engagement with [their] archive material and salute everyone involved for their hard work and patience and for wrestling with such integrity with [their] sounds and words.”
Fugazi formed in Washington D.C. in the depths of the underground punk scene of 1987. Despite the mainstream 80’s pop that was taking over and pushing the hardcore scene into the shadows of the music world, Fugazi thrived by staying true to their antiestablishment roots. Their music is raw, energetic and profane, so it is safe to assume that the last place the band expected to hear their music played and their story told was in an opera hall.
