Fans of both David Bowie and of Motorhead will have something to rejoice today. On September 1, the legendary rock band (R.I.P Kilmister and Bowie) will release Under Cover, a collection of cover songs throughout the band’s illustrious career. Sex Pistols’ “God Save the Queen,” The Ramones “Rockaway Beach,” and Metallica’s “Whiplash” will all make an appearance, but today the band decided to let loose a different single for fans.
Off the forthcoming album, the band released a cover of David Bowie’s classic “Heroes.” Right off the bat, you notice Motorhead’s upbeat energy and their rough-around-the-edges sound over the rather soulful Bowie track. However, the man Kilmster manages to do Bowie’s voice justice with a bit of melodic singing, even if there is a little bit of gruff thrown in.
The cover track came from the band during their Bad Magic sessions in 2015 while working with Cameron Webb, and was one of the last songs recorded before Kilmister sadly passed later that same year.
Guitarist Phil Campbell recalled fond memories during the recording of that song with the band. “It’s such a great Bowie song, one of his best, and I could only see great things coming out of it from us, and so it proved to be,” Phil Campbell said, “and Lemmy ended up loving our version.” Former drummer Mikkey Dee also added,” He [Kilmister] was very, very proud of it, not only because it turned out so well but because it was fun! Which is what projects like this should be—fun!”
