“Art-punk” group Liars have been getting things in order for their upcoming album TFCF. Today, the group dropped off two new songs as a sneak peek for fans.
The first of the new pair, “Coins in My Caged Fist,” rides on a stuttering and offbeat drum loop, with some synth lines riding on top of it. The track occasionally gives way to some distorted and muted vocals, and overall creates a harsh and dissonant track. In a press release, lead singer Angus Andrew stated that “I wanted to do lots of sampling…I’d done a little in the past, but I’d started to realize the possibilities of the process, of sampling myself playing ‘proper’ instruments, and then using the sampler to put it all together in an ‘artificial’ way.”
The second track, “The Grand Delusional,” has a more somber and melodic side. Distorted and dubbed acoustic guitars strum in and out of a skeletal drum beat, as Andrew repeats in a rather somber and restrained manner “they can take our insides.” In that same press release, Andrew said “There’s acoustic guitar all over this record! How ridiculous is that?”
The new LP comes after the (amicable) departure of member Aaron Hemphill, essentially making Liars Angus Andrew’s solo project and the focus on Andrew’s vocals reflects this newfound insularity. When asked about the departure, Andrew simply stated that Hemphill didn’t want to be a part of the band anymore. No hard feelings. Simple as that.
