Watain Announces New Album for January 2018 Release

Notorious Swedish extreme black metal pioneers Watain have announced that their long-awaited sixth album will be released on January 5, 2018. The as-of-yet-untitled record is the follow-up to 2013’s well received The Wild Hunt and will be available via Century Media.

Not much about the album is available at the moment, but whatever information we do have at the moment comes in the form of two flyers released by the band that reveal the new full-length will be accompanied five live shows across Europe. Exact venues are yet to be announced, but tickets will go on sale on Friday August 4.

One of the flyers actually includes that the new album will be featuring certain “guests,” but refuses to clarify who these guests actually are.

When asked in 2015 about Watain’s contribution to black metal, frontman Erik Danielsson said his band had already achieved “rare and special” status.

“We always knew that if we did this, we would do it and hold nothing back,” he continued. “We wanted to create something extremely significant – and we have. It would be blasphemous to go out there and not mean it. If you’re going to contribute to black metal, you better fucking contribute to black metal. It’s not something that you can casually become a part of.”

In describing the band’s music overall, Danielsson explained “I relate to the idea of that writing a song in WATAIN is similar to releasing/unleashing something. The recording of it in a studio would represent its birth, and the performing of it on a stage is where we allow it to come to life, where it is charged with the force that we have accumulated over the years. I think people who have listened to the album will know what I mean when they see the shows.”

UPDATE: Watain has come out with a whole new set of information about the new record, including album art and track listing. The record, named Trident Wolf Eclipse, will be released January 5th, 2018 via Century Media. To celebrate this announcement, the band has released the lead single “Nuclear Alchemy,” along with a new music video.

Read the band’s statement here.

“After 20 years of carving our own path through and out of the world, Trident Wolf Eclipse feels like a worthy point of arrival indeed. One of power and force, shining a new harsh light upon all that has been, those that perished along the way, the life altering struggle and triumphant ecstasy of Watain. Trident Wolf Eclipse is however not about the past, nor the future, it is about here and now, and we sincerely look forward to show you all what that implies. To all those that are as impatient as we are for that day to come; Thank you for your unending support and see you soon.”
