Billy Bragg Joins Wilco at Newport Folk Festival for “California Stars”

The Newport Folk Festival in Rhode Island continued last night with many collaborations from all the performers. One of the high lights of the night included the band Wilco bringing out Billy Bragg to perform “California Stars” from their album Mermaid Avenue.

Billy Bragg and Wilco released Mermaid Avenue in 1998, which is an album of previously unheard lyrics by the late folk singer Woody Gutherie. The album was the first of several projects organized by Gutherie’s daughter, Nora Gutherie. Billy Bragg and Wilco also released Mermaid Avenue Vol. II in 2000. The projects are named after the song “Mermaid’s Avenue.” This was also the name of the street in Coney Island, New York where Guthrie lived.

As reported by the BrooklynVegan, Last night also included performances from Angel Olsen, who brought out Jim James for “Sister” and “Those Were The Days”, The Avett Brothers, Off Rex, Nikki Lane, Marlon Williams, and more.
